Breaking: House Of Reps Approve June 12 As Democracy Day
June 12 Replaces May 29 As Nigeria’s Democracy Day
The House of Representatives has approved that June 12 be marked as Democracy Day in Nigeria.
Naija News reports that Democracy Day in Nigeria is recognized and marked on the 29th of May every year.
However on June 12 this year, President Muhamadu Buhari made history as he declared it a Democracy Day in honour of late MKO Abiola and confirming that he won the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
The approval followed the adoption of a report on a bill seeking to amend the Public Holidays Act 2004.
Considering the report at the plenary today the lawmakers approved the amendments to three clauses in the Act, as recommended in the report.
One of the clauses deleted May 29 as Democracy Day and replaced the date with June 12.
