El-Zakzaky: Angry Shiite Protesters Shut Down Abuja Streets
IMN Protest Detention Of El-Zakzaky
Followers and supporters of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shi’ites, yesterday, took over some streets in Abuja in angry protest.
The protesters are demanding the unconditional release of their spiritual leader, Sheikh El-Zakzaky and his wife.
Naija News recalls the Shiite leader and his wife have been in custody of the Department of State Security (DSS) since 2015, after a clash with soldiers in Kaduna.
Despite several court orders that he be granted bail, the government has so far refused to honour the orders, citing issues of national security.
This development has resulted in continuous protests by his supporters, with the protests sometimes turning violent.
This online platform gathered that during yesterday’s protest, the aggrieved Shiite members, marched through unity fountain in Maitama to Federal Secretariat, to National Mosque, up to Wuse 2, in Abuja.
The IMN protesters used placards with various inscriptions, brigade band and other sound amplifiers to pass their message of freedom to concerned persons.
Some of the inscriptions on the placards carried unprintable names used to describe President Muhammadu Buhari and his government, whom they accused of being responsible for the detention of their spiritual leader.
Their action caused panic in some parts of Abuja, as motorists and other road users tried to avoid been caught in the middle of the on-going protests over fears of attack.
