Violent Protest Force Rep Members To Adjourn Sitting

Members of the house of representatives hurriedly adjourned their sitting on Tuesday after members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) also known as Shi’ites forcefully broke into the National Assembly complex.

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, told other lawmakers that they would have to adjourn “due to security concerns” while an executive session would be held to deliberate the incident.

Recall as earlier reported by Naija News, some lives have been feared lost while property including cars were destroyed and others burnt when the Shiite protesters broke down the first gate of the National Assembly.

However, as they approached the second gate which serves as the main entrance to the complex, security operatives on ground repelled them, shooting into the air and firing tear gas to disperse the violent protesters.

The Shiite members are protesting the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim Elzakzaky, who has been in custody since been arrested in 2015 after a clash with the convoy of the chief of army staff in Kaduna state.

There have been several court orders granting him bail but the government has so far refused to obey the orders.
