Uber Loses Operating Licence In London
A world known transportation company, Uber has been stripped of its license to operate in London, as the local transport regulator said it was “not fit and proper” to hold such a permit.
Transport for London said on Monday that it would not renew the ride-hailing giant operator’s license, citing a pattern of failures that had placed passenger safety and security at risk.
Transport for London said Uber had made a number of positive changes and improvements to its culture, leadership and systems in the period since the Chief Magistrate granted it a licence in June 2018 but added that a pattern of failures by the company had been identified.
The president of the union said the tech company needed to do better profiling of its clients in order to protect its drivers.
However, the transit company while reacting to the licence seizure, called the decision “extraordinary and wrong,” and has 21 days to file an appeal, which it said it would do. It can continue operating during the appeals process.
Transport for London cited “several breaches that placed passengers and their safety at risk” in its decision not to extend Uber’s license, which expires at midnight Monday. Among other things, unauthorized drivers carried out thousands of rides, the regulator said.
