Barack and Michelle Obama’s new production company has won its first award for its work on the short documentary film “American Factory” on Sunday for the best documentary. The documentary covers a community in America’s Rust Belt which has seen a decline in auto jobs over the decades.
Naija News Understands that the former president and first lady weren’t able to attend Sunday’s ceremony in Hollywood. The award was accepted by the film’s co-directors Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert.
Accepting the award, Reichert said, “Working people have it harder and harder these days — and we believe that things will get better when workers of the world unite.”
Michelle Obama sent her congratulations, tweeting “The best stories are rarely tidy or perfect. But that’s where the truth so often lies.”

Barak and Michelle Obama acquired “American Factory” early last year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it had won the directing award. “Our film is from Ohio and China,” director Julia Reichert said. “But it really could be from anywhere that people put on a uniform, punch a clock, trying to make their families have a better life.” “Working people have it harder and harder these days, and we believe that things will get better when workers of the world unite,” she said in accepting her statuette.
