The trouble facing Governor Godwin Obaseki ahead of the Edo 2020 governorship has taken a new twist with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirants and stalwarts rejecting his alleged plan to defect to the opposition party.

Naija News understands that several reports on Friday evening alleged that that Governor Obaseki has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after he was disqualified by the screening committee and had since joined the opposition PDP, with the hope of flying the party’s flag for the Edo 2020 election.

Although Obaseki is yet to issue a statement regarding his alleged defection to the PDP and the plan to run for a second term in office on the platform of the main opposition party in the state, a report filed by Vanguard Newspaper, however, quoted PDP aspirants and stalwarts to have resisted the plan.

According to Vanguard, one of the leading aspirants said: “I will personally resist it. There are so many questions to ask. Did Obaseki purchase nomination form of his party, yes; did he appear before the screening processes of his party, the answer yes. What happened?

“He was disqualified. Now when was the closing date for the purchase of PDP form? Did Obaseki buy, did he appear before the screening? So the whole thing doesn’t add up and I will resist it. I learnt he has met with the National Leadership of our party but we are waiting for him.”

The report quoted a staunch supporter of one of the aspirants who is the member representing Oredo Federal Constituency where Obaseki comes from, Hon Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama to have referred to the case of Obaseki as that of a “rotten tomato that no one can buy. How can our party be thinking of giving him a ticket, for me, it shows we are no serious. How can they be thinking of an aspirant who was disqualified by his party over issues that can be challenged in court? “.
