Nigerians Blast Buhari For Nominating Lauretta Onochie As INEC Commissioner
A storm of reactions by Nigerians has greeted the nomination of Lauretta Onochie as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Naija News had reported earlier that President Muhammadu Buhari nominated Onochie, his Special Assistant on Social Media, as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), representing Delta State.
In a letter of request to the National Assembly which was read during plenary on Tuesday by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, President Buhari also nominated Prof. Mohammed Sani representing Katsina; Prof. Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti) and Seidu Ahmed (Jigawa) to fill the quota of INEC Commissioners in their state.
The President noted in his letter to the Nigerian Senate that the nomination was pursuant to Paragraph 14 of part 1F of the First Schedule of the 1999 Constitution.
However, displeased with Onochie’s nomination as INEC Commissioner, Nigerians took to the micro-blogging site, Twitter to kick against the appointment and as well blast President Buhari for nominating his aide as an INEC Commissioner.
Naija News captured some of the tweets below…
So Even in the middle of a severe Protest, buhari still appointed Lauretta Onochie Inec commissioner? A woman whose utterances are unbecoming of a government aide is warming up to be given new wings to fly wild. @MBuhari You should have done better because we have better heads!

Buhari doesn’t think and nobody is thinking for him.
Lauretta Onochie is a reckless defender of this administration and a card carrying member of the ruling party, APC.
Her nomination as INEC Commissioner is unacceptable.
Stop destroying our institutions with partisanship.

Dear PDP senators, only one thing we ask of you.
Block the nomination of that drunkard called Lauretta Onochie as INEC Commissioner. Don’t be unfortunate please.
— Thεό Abu (@TheoAbuAgada) October 13, 2020
The appointment of Lauretta Onochie as INEC Commissioner is unconstitutional, undemocratic and ridiculous. Section 14 of Part 1 of Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution provides that a person to be appointed as INEC commissioner must be a person of “unquestionable integrity”.

Appointing Lauretta Onochie to INEC is a contradiction in terms. How’ll you nominate a staunch member of a political party to a body that is supposed to be independent and will make decisions affecting her party? The Senate should reject her and all others affiliated to a party. https://t.co/EL0GxMEp6i

Appointing Lauretta Onochie as INEC commissioner today is ill-timed and I’ll-advised. Who are the people advising our president? The only appointment people want to hear now should relate to an independent enquiry panel on the issues on ground. #StopPoliceBrutalityinNigeria
