Three Feared Dead As Custom Officers Clash With Suspected Smugglers In Ogun
Some officials of the Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) reportedly clash with some alleged smugglers today.
According to the report made available to newsmen a few moments ago, at least three people died from the incident which happened on Tuesday, December 22.
Naija News learnt that the chaos happened at Kikelomo, Ayetoro, the headquarters of Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State after officials of the NCS raided the area in a trail of some suspected smugglers.
“In their attempt to evacuate bags of smuggled rice from a building, there ensued a clash between the customs officers and the owners of the items,” a source told newsmen.
The source noted further that “in order to scare away the suspected smugglers, the NCS operatives were said to have fired gunshots intermittently.”
He added, “In the process, three persons were reportedly hit by stray bullets. One of them was an okada rider named Sola, who was shot while on transit.”
Naija News gathered that residents scamper for their lives after men of the Nigerian army arrived the scene to restore calmness. Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun 1 Area Command of the NCS, Ahmed Oloyede, when reached on phone said there was a chaos in Ayetoro.
Oloyede, however, said he has but a little knowledge of the incident when contacted. He said: “I have gotten the information, but I am yet to get the details of what really happened.
“I will get back to you when I get the details,” Oloyede told our correspondent on phone.
In another news, Naija News reported that former Minister of State for Education and former National President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Professor Jerry Agada is dead.
Prof. Agada an educationist and author died around 8:00 am on Tuesday morning.
