OAU: 200 Level Student Falls Inside Soakaway, Dies

A student of Obafemi Awolowo University identified as Ajibola Ayomikun has died after falling into a soakaway pit.

The 200-level student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages fell into a soakaway in BVER, one of the private hostels in the students’ village.

The development was confirmed by the spokesman of the institution, Abiodun Olarewaju.

According to Olarewaju, the management of the University is saddened by the unfortunate incident.

He said, “When the news got to us, we immediately mobilised the emergency responders from the University, Osun State, and the OAU Teaching Hospital who through concerted efforts got the student out.

“She was immediately taken to the OAU Teaching Hospitals Complex where she was certified dead.”

The Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Eyitope Ogunbodede lead the management team of the University to the scene to sympathise with the students and commiserated with the parents of the deceased.

Ogunbodede, who described the incidence as “tragic and unacceptable”, promised to “critically look into the circumstances that led to the student’s death and mete out appropriate sanctions against those involved or whoever is found culpable”.

The VC appealed to the student to be law-abiding adding that police are investigating the incident.
