Ex-Minister, Dambazau Lists Major Threats To 2023 Elections
A former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, has listed the major threats to the 2023 general elections.
Dambazau said the worsening insecurity in the country is a major threat to the 2023 elections, saying that terrorists would continue attacking soft targets.
The former Army chief said the activities of terrorists in the North and members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the South East would need to be addressed before the 2023 polls.
Dambazau made this known while delivering a paper titled, “2023 Politics: National Security and Nigeria’s Stability” at an event in Abuja on Tuesday.
The former minister pointed out that the Independent National Electoral Officials (INEC) officials and ad-hoc staff would be highly apprehensive due to the security challenges across the country.
Dambazau, however, asked the federal government to provide adequate security for INEC officials that will be on duty.
He said: “Insecurity will surely affect the 2023 elections because some of the community would still be displaced and the terrorists would likely continue attacks on soft targets.
“INEC officials and ad-hoc staff would be highly apprehensive despite the assurance by the government to protect them. Access to polling units in border communities may pose some difficulties. This is one more reason why adequate security must be provided.”
