Shehu Sani Reacts As Buhari Unveils New Naira Notes

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has reacted to the new naira notes unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Naija News reports that President Buhari on Wednesday unveiled N200, N500, and N1000 new naira notes shortly before the start of the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Recall that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, during a press briefing, warned Nigerians against holding on to the old naira notes, saying there is no going back on the January 31st 2023, deadline to render the old naira notes useless completely.

However, shortly after the redesigned naira notes were unveiled on Wednesday, Senator Sani took to Twitter to mock the CBN.

He tweeted: “If it’s Naira colour, the CBN should have just engaged Snapchat.”

Naija News understands that the new naira notes have caused a lot of reactions on social media since they were unveiled.

New Naira Notes: CBN Directs Banks To Work On Saturdays Till January 2023

Meanwhile, as part of efforts to ensure Nigerians return the old naira notes, the CBN last week directed all commercial banks in the country to work on Saturdays till January 31, 2023.

The apex bank issued the directive at the CBN fair in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, last week, Naija News reports.

Recall that the CBN announced plans to redesign the N200, N500, and ₦1,000 banknotes about three weeks ago, stating that the new naira notes will be rolled out by December 15, 2022.

At the CBN fair themed, “Promoting financial stability and economic development,” the CBN Director, Corporate Communications Department, Osita Nwasinobi, said the new and old notes shall remain legal tender until January 31, 2023, when the old notes will cease to be legal tender.

According to him, banks have also been directed to return the existing currencies to the CBN immediately.

Nwasinobi, who was represented by the CBN Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Akpama Uket, noted, “They have also been instructed to receive the existing banknotes beyond the threshold stipulated by the Cashless Policy without charges to customers.

“Consequently, you must return all the current N200, N500, and ₦1,000 banknotes to your bank before the expiration of the deadline.”

Naija News also gathered that the CBN warned Nigerians not to mishandle naira notes, adding that there are consequences for such actions.
