Andy Murray Beats Jack Draper To Book A Date With Dan Evans
The Battle of the Brits which started on Wednesday was tied after day one until Andy Murray stepped up to defeat Jack Draper of England in a decisive tie-break.
After England’s Dan Evans defeated Scotland’s McHugh, who was rated 373rd, 6-4, 6-2 in the first game, Andy Murray, 35, won for Team Scotland in Aberdeen with a score of 6-2, 1-6, 12-10.
Draper, 20, had the lead going into the 10-point tiebreaker, but Murray turned things around with his customary tenacity.
Murray utilized the enthusiastic home crowd to break three times in the opening set, winning it after converting a second set point on Draper’s serve.
The English player came back strongly, breaking Murray three times to win the second set, displaying the form that got him to this year’s Next Gen Finals for the top-ranked ATP Tour rookies.
He took an early 6-3 lead in the decisive tie-break before Murray energized the fans by reaching for a ball out wide and forcing a backhand winner down the line.
On a third match point, the Scotsman used a magnificent forehand winner to win after riding the tsunami of encouragement to even the score.
After the game, Andy Murray said: “While I am still able to do it this is what it is all about.
“Will to win, fighting for every point, chasing every ball down. It was part luck, part skill.
“A few shots came off and it was an unbelievable ending. I’ve not played many tie-breaks like that before.”
On Thursday in the afternoon session, Evans will play one more singles match against Andy Murray.
Four men’s singles matches and two men’s doubles matches are part of the Battle of the Brits, which will take place between Team Scotland and Team England on December 21 and 22.
Along with facing Evans, Andy Murray is scheduled to play doubles with his brother Jamie to end the tournament on Thursday night. This could be the last time they ever play together.
