Norwich Sack Dean Smith After Three Wins In 13 Games
Dean Smith has been fired as the head coach of Norwich City as a result of his team’s record of only three victories in 13 Championship games.
Both first-team coach Liam Bramley and assistant manager Craig Shakespeare have left Carrow Road alongside Dean Smith.
The team is under the interim management of Steve Weaver and Allan Russell.
“As the club continues to work towards its on-field objectives this season, the board believes that it is the right time to make this transition,” a statement from Norwich read.
“The club will now work to identify and appoint a new head coach that can deliver both the level of performances required to challenge at the top end of the league whilst implementing a consistent style of play.”
Monday’s 2-1 defeat at Luton was the third defeat in four matches for Dean Smith’s Norwich City.
The sporting director of Norwich Stuart Webber said: “This was a tough decision, but one that we felt was necessary to give ourselves the best possible chance of achieving our objective of promotion to the Premier League this season.
“With just under half of the season remaining and three consecutive home games on the horizon, we now have a real opportunity to build some forward and positive momentum, both on and off the pitch.”
Under Dean Smith, Norwich City were in first place on October 1, 2022, but are now in fifth place and 12 points behind the top two.
Note that Smith replaced German coach Daniel Farke in November 2021, however, Smith was unable to prevent them from being relegated back to the Championship the previous season.
During Farke’s four and a half years in charge, the team twice won the second-tier championship, although each time they were only successful for one Premier League season.
Before moving on to Brentford and subsequently Aston Villa, Smith started his managerial career at Walsall.
In 2019, he led Villa to promotion from the Championship, and the following year, they advanced to the Carabao Cup final.
The former defender was fired from Villa in the start of the 2021–22 season after five straight Premier League losses. Eight days later, he became the coach of Norwich.
