Gov. Abiodun Allegedly Distributes 1,000 Naira Old Notes To Residents Amidst Buhari’s Directives (Video)
In what seems like an attempt to garner more public support for the general election, the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has allegedly distributed old 1,000 Naira notes to residents in State.
Naija News reports that this comes amidst the directives of the Central Bank of Nigeria that the old Naira notes have ceased to be legal tender and allegations that some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors had stocked up old 500 and 1000 Naira notes to induce voters.
In a video sighted online, some of the residents were seen with envelopes branded with governor Abiodun’s picture.
While they lamented that people are rejecting the old money, a voice who spoke in the background convinced the resident that the notes remain legal tenders contrary to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) policy.
He also urged them to express appreciation to the governor and the residents in turn prayed for Abiodun.
Refuse Old Notes And Risk Shut Down
Meanwhile, commercial banks in Ogun State have been warned against refusing old naira notes which the Supreme Court has declared legal tender.
Dapo Abiodun took to the micro-blogging platform, Twitter, to warn commercial banks against refusing the old N200, N500, and N1000 bank notes.
The governor said any commercial bank that is caught refusing old banknotes would risk being shut down by the state government.
His reaction follows the adjournment of the case on the naira swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) till Wednesday, February 22, by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The court joined Katsina, Lagos, Cross Rivers, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Sokoto States as co-plaintiffs in the suit challenging the Naira Redesign policy of the Federal Government.
