Naira Notes

The Supreme Court on Wednesday failed to give a definite ruling on the confusion which has trailed the naira redesign/naira swap policy introduced by the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

There were expectations that the Supreme Court would give a definite ruling on the validity of the old naira notes when the suit before it resumed on Wednesday (today) but that failed to materialize.

Before adjourning the case till March 3 which is after the 2023 presidential election, the apex court declared that it would not be pressured to become a scapegoat in the country over the ongoing controversies on the Naira redesign and swap policy.

Naija News reports that the Supreme Court has before it, the suit filed by the state governments of Kaduna, Kogi, Zamfara, and several others against President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration and the CBN seeking an order to stop the government from implementing the February 10 deadline for old N200, N500 and ₦1,000 notes to cease to be legal tenders.

However, as the apex court again adjourned the matter, some Nigerians have taken to the micro-blogging site, Twitter to express their views on the development.

One of those who revealed his mind is the former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani who said the Supreme Court left two fighting couples in the middle of the sea with its decision on Wednesday.

He wrote: “The Supreme Court left the two fighting couples in the middle of the sea.”

Below are some other reactions culled by Naija News.

@FirstOmoIbadan: March 3rd is still not good enough. A date after March 11th would have been better.

@leog2005: Is obvious those overnight champions of the masses (APC govs) have lost this case, is time for them sit back and allow Nigerians make their choice, the days of vote buying is gone. Welcome to the Era of integrity and competence. Nigerians pls vote wisely.

@oga_pharmacist: The Supreme Court is eroding its legitimacy and aura by the day – not good for our nation.

In any case, this old naria matter is dead as dodo. The old notes have lost trust of the people, even though the course reinstate them, not many people will accept and trade in them.

@PoojaMedia: BREAKING: The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned a case instituted by the state governments against the Federal Government challenging the implementation of the naira redesign.

The apex court adjourned the case to March 3 for judgement.

Hmmmm

@HiikyaaTor: Why Yahaya Bello was in Supreme Court fighting for the redemption of their old Naira ( now worthless ) the high court just gave an order of 14 properties linked to him!
Karma is so fast

@UncleKenPhD: is indeed part of Nigeria’s problem! When it comes important national issues, Supreme Court takes years to make a decision, but when it comes to corruption-ridden issue, like Hope Uzodimma’s,
@SupremeCourtNg would be fast to deliver Rulings.

@aii_stephen: Supreme court use wisdom avoid katakata

@ChukwuemekaCy83: Useless justices aiding and abetting corruption.

@FitJoe44: Well done Supreme Court 👍🏾, there’s confusion in PDAPC camps now, let’s see how they’ll use the stacked old 500&1000 notes to buy votes 😂, if anyone is collects the old notes, you’re just fooling yourself 💁🏾‍♂️,this election isn’t going to be business as usual.

@Goams6: They are basically wasting their time cos those involved do not have respect for the rule of law,,if not the previous temporary halt on the ban should hold. You guys are confusing innocent citizens with lack of regards for one another.

@TEzeike: Hope they will now understand that the so-called interim order expired today. Judgement on 3rd March would become academic at best for the plaintiffs.

@kejay_prince: The governors are 100% abandoning the case after the elections!

@Sir_BenBoye: Lmaoooooooooo…always knew that judgement will be after presidential election and it will still be in favour of Buhari and Emefiele.

@Ninasteve007: The backlash was too much for them 🤣🤣🤣
Adjournment is their best bet. Let election come and go!
