Naira Crunch: Dapo Abiodun Begs As Angry Residents Humiliate Him (Video)
The Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, suffered huge embarrassment on Wednesday, while on an open-air campaign motorcade in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Naija News reports that a video sighted online captures hundreds of residents booing the governor and his entourage over the current hardship occasioned by the scarcity of new Naira notes.
The angry residents were heard shouting, “thief, thief, ole, we don’t want’ and refused to allow Abiodun to address them.
The governor who is seeking a second term bid on the platform of the All Progressives Congress also offered the crowd souvenirs including t-shirts and hats but they rejected the campaign materials.
Abiodun desperately pleaded with them not to be angry over the current Naira policy as he is not responsible.
He added that he is not happy with the current situation and urged them to be patient as the matter will soon be resolved.
Refuse Old Notes And Risk Shut Down
Recall that commercial banks in Ogun State had been warned against refusing old naira notes which the Supreme Court has declared legal tender.
Dapo Abiodun took to the micro-blogging platform, Twitter, to warn commercial banks against refusing the old N200, N500, and N1000 bank notes.
The governor said any commercial bank that is caught refusing old banknotes would risk being shut down by the state government.
His reaction follows the adjournment of the case on the naira swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) till Wednesday, February 22, by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The court joined Katsina, Lagos, Cross Rivers, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Sokoto States as co-plaintiffs in the suit challenging the Naira Redesign policy of the Federal Government.
