The Nigerian men’s national basketball team brightened their chances of qualifying for the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup by beating Guinea in Luanda, Angola on Saturday.

Naija News recalls that the Nigerian men’s national basketball team struggled in the first phase of FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup qualifiers.

Hence, they solely depend on their performance in the last phase of the qualifiers currently ongoing in Luanda to stand a chance of making it to the World Cup this summer.

The FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup is scheduled to kick off on August 25 and end on September 10, 2023. Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia will co-host the biggest tournament in the world of basketball.

Before Saturday’s victory over Guinea, the D’Tigers of Nigeria rekindled their World Cup ambitions with a victory against Ivory Coast on Friday.

The D’Tigers defeated Guinea 62-59 points at the Pavihao Multiusos de Luanda, despite trailing by 11 points in the fourth quarter.

The first quarter ended in a tie at 13-13, but the Guineans went on to win the second quarter 22-18 and the third quarter 13-8.

In the fourth and final quarter, the D’Tigers turned the tables and won the arduous contest 23-11.

D’Tigers gain ground on Ivory Coast and the hosts Angola in Group E by one point with the victory, moving them into third place with 14 points.

Nigeria’s next game is against Angola on Sunday.
