The Republic of Ireland are the first team to be eliminated from the 2023 Women’s World Cup Group B which is featuring the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Canada, and the tournament’s co-hosts Australia.

They have joined the category of Costa Rica and Zambia who were eliminated from Group A earlier in the day with a game in hand.

Recall that the Republic of Ireland lost their opening game 1-0 to the co-hosts last Friday and unfortunately for them, they couldn’t beat the reigning Olympics champions, Canada that drew 0-0 with Nigeria on the said day.

During Canada vs Ireland game earlier today, July 26, the reigning Olympics champions had to come from a goal down to beat the World Cup debutants 2-1 to end their journey in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

After only four minutes into the game, Irish captain Katie McCabe scored the Republic’s first World Cup goal with a spectacular corner.

The Irishwomen had many chances to extend their lead against the Olympic champions, but they were caught off guard in first-half injury time when Julia Grosso’s pass rebounded off defender Megan Connolly and nestled in the bottom corner amid pouring rain.

Adriana Leon gave Canada the lead eight minutes into the second half, and Ireland, despite pressing, was unable to score to keep their hopes of progressing alive.

Ireland will play for dignity against Nigeria in their last Group B match on July 31. But before then, Nigeria will strive to remain in the 2023 Women’s World Cup by beating the co-hosts, Australia, on Thursday, July 27. The game will kick off at 11 a.m.
