David Silva Retires From Professional Football
Former Spain international David Silva has announced his retirement from professional football less than three years after he left Manchester City for Real Sociedad.
Before he joined the Spanish La Liga club in 2020, the Spanish legend spent a decade with the reigning UEFA Champions League winners, Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles.
David Silva wanted to play a little longer even though he is already 37-year-old. However, a terrible knee injury during the preseason left him with no choice but to retire from the game after a 19-year football career.
The former Spain international joined Manchester City from Valencia in 2010 and went on to make 436 appearances for the English club, scoring 77 goals.
Silva, a hugely popular City player, was honored with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium in 2021, alongside fellow club icons Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero.
In addition to the four Premier League titles he won at City, David Silva helped City win two FA Cups and five League Cups.
Silva retired from Spain national team in 2018, having won the World Cup in 2010 as well as the European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
“Today is a sad day for me,” David Silva posted on social media earlier today, July 27.
“Today it is time to say goodbye to what I have dedicated my whole life to. Today it is time to say goodbye to my colleagues, who are like family to me. I will miss you very much.”
