Luke Shaw Recounts How Hurtful It Felt When Man City Won Treble
Manchester United defender Luke Shaw said the fact that their city rivals, Manchester City won the Treble hurt everyone at Old Trafford and the Red Devils cannot afford to allow it happen again.
Since 1999, only Manchester United have ever won the treble – the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and the FA Cup in one season.
United had a chance to stop Manchester City from breaking the record in the 2022-2023 season, but they lost to their city rivals in the FA Cup final which means they used United to win the treble.
“It hurt a lot. A lot,” Luke Shaw recounted.
“All of us as players felt that, especially for me, seeing them come to the England camp. It was really hard to take. We can’t let that happen again.
“It’s our time now to start putting a stamp on things and not letting it always be so easy for them because, in the past, it’s looked like that.
“As players, we can’t accept that anymore.”
Erik ten Hag’s first campaign as United’s manager in which Manchester City won the treble ended with just one trophy (the Carabao Cup) after losing FA Cup final to City and the Europa League knockout round to Sevilla.
Only Jose Mourinho has won more than one title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as United’s manager, and United have never won trophies in back-to-back seasons after Ferguson’s exit.
Ten Hag gives the impression that he is a manager who can at the very least make United contenders for major titles once more.
This picture is reinforced by the zeal with which Ten Hag approaches his job as a manager, the effective use of his time, and the demands he places on his players.
