Tobi Amusan In Action Today At World Athletics Championship
The reigning 100-meter women’s hurdles champion, Tobi Amusan, will defend her title today, August 24, at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
After starting the year on a high winning hurdles across the world and in her home country, Nigeria, the year almost ended in a bad note for her when she was hit with a ban in July for allegedly failing three doping tests.
Fortunately for her, the AIU cleared her before the commencement of the 2023 World Athletics Championship and she has been unstoppable so far.
Tobi Amusan made it to the finals on Wednesday, August 23, beating Jamaican Ackera Nugent to the first spot in 12.56 seconds.
The 26-year-old Nigerian hurdles queen whose 12.56 seconds semi-final finish is the eighth best qualifying time, could become the first African women athlete to win Gold in the hurdles event back-to-back.
Recall that she created a world record in the 2022 edition of the tournament in Oregon, the USA when she made it to the final in 12.12secs. She went on to become the first Nigerian to win the world title in wind-aided 12.06secs.
At 7:22 p.m. WAT later today, Tobi Amusan will aim to break her record and defend her gold medal against the very best in the sport. She will come up against American former world record holder Kendra Harrison, who won the first semi-finals in 12.33secs, and Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who won the last semi-finals in 12.41secs.
