Super Eagles Coach Not Bothered About 2023 AFCON Draw
The head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Jose Peseiro, is certain that his boys will triumph over the host of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ivory Coast.
Naija News reported on Thursday night, October 12, that the Super Eagles of Nigeria were drawn in Group A of the 2023 AFCON which comprises the hosts, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea Bissau.
Even though Super Eagles’ current FIFA ranking (6th) forced them to be seeded in Port 2 of the draw which opened them to face one of the biggest names in African football, antecedence shows that there is no cause for alarm.
Recall that the Eagles defeated Ivory Coast in the quarterfinal on their way to winning their third AFCON in South Africa in 2013.
Also, when Ivory Coast last hosted the competition 39 years ago, the Super Eagles got to the final.
Ivory Coast are aiming for a third AFCON victory after missing out on Qatar’s 2022 World Cup and they will now have to achieve that by going through the Eagles.
The head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, insisted that he is not concerned about the team he is going against, his concern is that the Eagles are aiming to win the 2023 AFCON.
“We want to win the AFCON, so it’s not important to choose or want to avoid any opponent”, the Portuguese coach told the Punch.
“The best moments are all those I was and I’m with my players, working to improve our organization and our team spirit.”
Note that the 2023 AFCON will take place in Ivory Coast from January 13 through February 11, 2024.
