Protest Hit Oyo Town Over Delay In Selection Of New Alaafin

Protest hit Oyo town on Tuesday, as residents of the ancients city took to the street to express their displeasure over the delay in the selection of new a Alaafin.
Naija News reports that the peaceful protest was staged at the entrance of the Oyo High Court in Awe.
The development comes after about five members of the Oyo Kingmakers dragged the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to court over fears of being replaced by the Governor due to the crisis surrounding the selection of a new Alaafin.
They carried placards with different inscriptions such as, “Oyo Mesi follow tradition, not money; Alaafin stool is not for sale; On Alaafin: Let dignity reign; Alaafin: Due process, Ife consultation are sacrosanct and a host of others.”
The claimants in the suit are Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola, Laguna of Oyo; High Chief Wakeel Oyedepo; Akiniku of Oyo, High Chief Amuda Yusuf; Areago Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Wahab Oyetunji and Alapo of Oyo and Warrant Officer for Alaapini of Oyo, Chief Gbadebo Mufutau, and they were all present in Court.
Along with the Governor, other defendants in the suit are the state Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Matters, as well as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.
The High Court sitting in Oyo, Oyo State, on Tuesday, however, adjourned the case till Thursday, November 2.
