Canada Initiates Investigation Into Abuja Embassy Fire, Issues Travel Warning

Canada has announced its intent to launch an inquiry into the explosion that resulted in a fire incident at its High Commission in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, which occurred on Monday.

In addition, Canada has released a travel advisory cautioning against nonessential trips to Nigeria, aligning with the United States and the United Kingdom’s recommendations.

Naija News reported that the Canada High Commission experienced a fire outbreak that tragically claimed the lives of two individuals and left two others injured.

Shortly after the incident, Melanie Joly, Canada’s Foreign Minister, released a concise statement addressing the explosion, expressing condolences for the victims.

“We can confirm that there was an explosion at our High Commission in Nigeria. The fire has been extinguished, and we are diligently investigating the cause of this situation. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the two individuals who lost their lives in this tragedy,” Joly stated.

Furthermore, the Canada High Commission in Nigeria posted on social media that it had “temporarily suspended its operations until further notice.”

This decision was attributed to “the volatile security situation across the entire country and the substantial risks posed by terrorism, crime, inter-communal conflicts, armed attacks, and kidnappings.”
