IGP Egbetokun Appoints Disu As New Rivers State Police Commissioner
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has reportedly appointed CP Olatunji Disu as the new Commissioner of Police for Rivers Command.
Naija News reports that Disu replaces CP Nwonyi Emeka, barely three days after Rivers youths demanded Emeka’s redeployment in a protest, following reports of threats to the State Governor, Siminalaye Fubara.
Disu is currently the Principal Staff Officer of the IGP and immediate past head, Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force
Seven others have also been redeployed to various commands, according to NTA.
Recall that there is a political rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Following reports of plans to impeach Governor Fubara, suspected arsonists bombed the Assembly, with the main chamber where the lawmakers sit for plenary razed on the night of Sunday, October 29, 2023.
Undeterred by the fire outbreak, about 24 lawmakers led by the House Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, sat at the Assembly auditorium the following day (Monday) and commenced an impeachment proceeding against the Governor.
On the same day at the Government House, Port Harcourt, the House Leader, Edisos Ehie, who had earlier been suspended, told journalists that 26 of his colleagues sat and elected him as the new Speaker of the House.
Reports had also emerged claiming the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Nwonyi Emeka, is a loyalist of Wike.
