CAF Robbed Me Of 2013 African Best Player Award – Mikel
Former Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, has alleged that the Confederation of African Football (CAF), denied him the opportunity to win the 2013 African Footballer of the Year Award.
On Monday’s episode of the ‘Obi One Podcast,’ the former Chelsea star asserted that he was unjustly overlooked for the prestigious award in 2013, with the honour going to Ivorian legend and former Manchester City captain Yaya Toure instead.
Mikel Obi emphasized that despite winning three tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2013, he was disappointed to lose the African Footballer of the Year Award to Yaya Toure, who, according to Mikel, did not secure any significant victories in the year 2013.
The former Chelsea midfielder was pivotal in securing victories for both Chelsea in the UEFA Europa League and Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“In 2013, it was my trophy (CAF Award) to be won. I won the Africa Cup of Nations, I won the Champions League, the year before and the Europa League the year 2013.
“And Yaya only won… he didn’t win anything, and coming into the ceremony, I thought I was winning; the information was that I was going to win it; I was told by CAF I was going to win it,” Mikel Obi said.
