Maduro Declared Winner Of Venezuela Presidential Election
President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela has been officially declared the winner of the nation’s presidential election, positioning him to assume the presidency for a third term.
The electoral commission of the country has confirmed Maduro’s victory in the election held on Sunday, July 28, securing him 51 per cent of the vote.
This outcome, however, diverges from several pre-election surveys and exit polls, which had predicted an opposition victory, attributing Maduro’s administration’s alleged misconduct to a significant shift in public sentiment against him.
The poll results, however, reveal that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, who had been widely perceived as the frontrunner, only garnered 44 per cent of the vote.
In response to his contentious victory, Maduro has declared his reelection as a victory for peace and stability.
Acknowledging the potential for public scepticism and widespread dissent, Maduro has swiftly announced his intention to sign a document on Monday, July 29, to initiate a national dialogue.
Naija News reports that criticism has already emerged within the opposition, accusing the National Electoral Council of behaving more like a government arm than an impartial entity.
The opposition had previously expressed a desire for a change in leadership.
“The results cannot be hidden. The country has peacefully chosen a change,” opposition’s chieftain, Edmundo Gonzalez, said in a post on X not long before the results were announced.
