Botswana President Gives Afternoon Day Off In Honour Of Tebogo’s 200m Feat
The President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, has declared an afternoon day off for all citizens, public and civil servants, in honour of Letsile Tebogo, who won Gold Medal in 200 meters race at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
President Masisi said Tebogo’s feat as the first African to win Gold in the 2024 Olympic games deserves an honour of national pause to salute his prowess.
In a statement published on his X handle, President Masisi said Tebogo by his feat at the 2024 Paris Olympics has etched his name and Botswana in the annal of history.
The state read: “His Excellency, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi hereby declares to the nation, that he has found it a fitting tribute to Mr. Letsile Tebogo, ‘Botswana Sensation’, to grant Batswana and residents an afternoon day off, on this very day, Friday the 9th August, 2024.
“The decision has been duly made to recognize and honour Letsile Tebogo as the first Motswana and first African to win a Gold Medal for 200m in the history of the Olympics.
“Furthermore, the President underscores, recognizes and acknowledges Letsile’s performance and achievement as markedly outstanding, and deserving of the nation to pause and celebrate him in a most unique, appropriate and responsible manner, that will be etched in the annals of the history of the Republic.
“Accordingly, His Excellency President Masisi, wishes to state that, on behalf of all the citizenry, he applauds Letsile.”
Tebogo, on Thursday, sprinted his way into the record books as the new men’s 200m Olympic champion, with an incredible performance, setting a blazing time of 19.46.
