The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has mandated an immediate inquiry into the tragic boat incident that transpired in Kogi State, resulting in significant loss of life.

Naija News reports that the boat accident, which took place along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in the Kupa Local Government Area, involved more than 160 passengers, with 24 individuals rescued and many others still missing.

In expressing condolences on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force to the government and citizens of Kogi State, particularly to the families impacted by the boat disaster on November 29, 2024, the IGP emphasized the gravity of the situation.

In a statement on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that, in light of this unfortunate event, the IGP has instructed the Force Marine officer to spearhead a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He noted that the objective is to ascertain the contributing factors and formulate actionable strategies to avert similar incidents on the nation’s waterways. This investigation will also aim to enhance the overall safety and emergency response protocols for water transport throughout the country.

The IGP further reassured the residents of Kogi State and all Nigerians of the police force’s steadfast commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies to facilitate the prompt rescue of the missing passengers.

The IGP also urged waterway operators, boat owners, and other stakeholders to engage closely with the Force Marine Department in implementing and enforcing essential safety measures to safeguard passengers and operators.

The Force PRO reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to improving safety on waterways, ensuring justice for victims, and reducing future risks through enhanced collaboration and proactive initiatives.
