Messi Shun Biden’s Medal Of Freedom Ceremony
Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi was noticeably absent from a prestigious ceremony at the White House on Sunday, where he was set to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States.
The ceremony, which recognized individuals for their significant contributions to society, saw Hollywood icons Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox among the honorees.
However, Messi’s absence raised eyebrows, as neither he nor a representative attended the event to accept the award.
A statement issued on Messi’s behalf reads, “The White House informed FIFA, which informed the club at the end of December that Leo was to be awarded this recognition.
“Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House saying that he feels deeply honoured and that it is a great privilege to receive this recognition but that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments, he will not be able to attend.
“He thanked the gesture and noted that he hopes to have the opportunity to meet with him in the near future.”
Messi was recognised for his unprecedented success on the pitch and his charity work.
On being named among the honorees, the White House said of the Argentine, “He supports healthcare and education programs for children around the world through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.”
