Protests Erupt At PDP National Secretariat Over National Secretary Dispute
Tensions have escalated within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as protests erupted at the party’s national secretariat over the contentious position of National Secretary.
The party, which had been on a break since December, was set to resume operations on Monday.
However, according to Daily Trust, the headquarters in Abuja was overrun by demonstrators supporting embattled Secretary Senator Sam Anyanwu.
The protesters were opposing the assumption of office by Sunday Ude-Okoye, recently declared National Secretary by the Court of Appeal in Enugu.
At the entrance of the PDP’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, protesters chanted slogans such as “No vacancy in the National Secretary’s office” and “Senator Sam Anyanwu remains the National Secretary.”
The protest prompted an increased security presence, with additional police officers deployed to the area.
A police lorry was positioned outside the main gate, and security personnel, including police and private guards, conducted thorough searches of staff and visitors before allowing them entry.
Meanwhile the embattled Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu has resumed at the party’s secretariat.
Naija News understands Anyanwu arrived at the PDP secretariat in Abuja around 10:56 a.m. and headed straight for his office, where he was received by his personal staff.
Anyanwu’s resumption is coming on the heels of a court declaration that Sunday Ude-Okoye is the authentic National Secretary of the PDP.
Speaking to reporters at the PDP secretariat, Anyanwu dismissed an earlier statement by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, affirming Ude-Okoye as the party’s valid National Secretary in line with a court pronouncement.
In dismissing Ologunagba’s position, Anyanwu told newsmen that the submission of the PDP spokesperson is simply his personal opinion, adding that he has appealed the court judgment against him.
“That is his opinion. It’s not the opinion of the party.
“As National Publicity Secretary of the party, I wouldn’t want to disparage him. Maybe he didn’t get the facts correctly. I have appealed,” Anyanwu submitted.
