Lakurawa: Military Men Are Using Useless Rifles – Military Veteran
A retired military officer, Colonel Nasiru Salami, has raised concerns about the quality of weapons being used by Nigerian security forces in their battle against the newly-formed terror group, Lakurawa, which has been causing havoc in the North-West geopolitical zone.
On Wednesday, the 76-year-old veteran appeared on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme to mark the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Naija News reports that the veteran highlighted the disparity between the weapons used by the Nigerian security forces and those employed by the Lakurawa militants.
Security Forces At A Disadvantage
Colonel Salami revealed alarming details about the weapons in use, claiming that security agents are armed with inferior rifles compared to the more sophisticated weapons used by the terrorists.
He said, “Somebody called me from Maiduguri yesterday and said this Lakurawa, they have divided themselves into two, attacking from different sides.”
Salami continued, “According to him, the rifle they (the government) gave them (security agents) is this our general rifle, GT3 or so, while the ones they (the Lakurawa) were using, when they range, they will see as far as about a mile. That’s the Lakurawa people. They have very sophisticated weapons.”
He further explained the disparity in range, stating, “Now, our men are using useless rifles that cannot go beyond a quarter of a mile but these people when they shoot from a far distance, they will aim and get the target.”
Salami called on the Federal Government to provide the security forces with superior assault rifles capable of competing with or surpassing the weapons of the insurgents.
He stressed the importance of equipping the troops with the necessary tools for success in the field.
