Armed Forces Day Is To Celebrate End Of Civil War - Major General Jibril

The National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Major General Abdulmalik Jibril (Rtd), has said the Armed Forces Remembrance Day was a day to celebrate the sacrifices of men of the military who sacrifice their lives for the nation.

General Jibril disclosed that January 15th was chosen as the Armed Forces Remembrance Day to also mark the end of Nigeria-Biafra’s 30-month civil war.

Naija News reported that President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima and 36 state governors took turns on Wednesday to lay wreaths in honour of late servicemen.

Speaking in an interview with Arise News Wednesday night, General Jibril said the efforts of the military in protecting the nation required commendation.

It is a day of fulfillment by the federal government, that has set aside this particular day, 15th January, as a day of celebration and commemoration of our fallen heroes who have at different times in our history contributed and also sometimes made supreme sacrifices during the engagement of the Nigerian military both during the first, Second World War; then under the unfortunate civil war of Nigeria, various United Nations peacekeeping engagement that Nigerian troops are involved and of course internal security operation that is still taking place and the various theatres where our soldiers are.

“It’s a day set aside to remember and to celebrate, to remember very solemnly those who made the supreme sacrifice and of course a day of joy because we remember the day the civil war was ended; that is after 30 months of unfortunate civil war on the 15th of January 1970, that is when the civil war,” he said.

The National Chairman of Nigeria Legion said no government would want to delist the significance of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

He continued, “So the Nigerian government decided to make it a day that we will remember those who have made the supreme sacrifices and also celebrate those who are living those who have served and retired those who are still serving actively.

“This day is very significant and it’s a testimony to the commitment of the successive government in Nigeria that this day will continue to be remembered forever. I cannot imagine a day any regime that will come and say they don’t want to remember the foreign heroes who defended the integrity, territorial integrity of this country, internal security and sacrifice that make us to go to sleep and wake up you know fine.”
