Rangers defender Leon Balogun has affirmed he has not retired from international football and remains available for selection to represent Nigeria.

Balogun’s last appearance in a Nigerian jersey came during a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe in June 2022.

In that match, the Super Eagles delivered an impressive performance, defeating their opponents 10-0.

Since then, however, the 36-year-old defender has found himself consistently overlooked for national selection, primarily due to ongoing fitness issues.

Despite being passed over for the national team in recent call-ups, Balogun has been enjoying a strong season with Rangers, showcasing his talent on the pitch and demonstrating readiness for a potential return to the Super Eagles.

Following his positive performances at the club level, there have been growing calls from fans and analysts alike for his immediate recall to the national team.

In an interview with Brila FM, Balogun expressed his eagerness to represent Nigeria once again.

“It’s not that I’ve not accepted an invitation. Unfortunately, right before the World Cup break, I suffered an injury that was supposed to last a few weeks but didn’t go the way it was supposed to,” he explained.

Balogun noted that the injury prevented him from joining the squad when he would have liked. He said, “I just couldn’t come. I was not fit yet, and after I got fit, I relapsed, but since then, I haven’t had a lengthy injury spell.”

He emphasized his ongoing commitment to the national team, stating, “I have always been available. I’ve never said that I retired from international football, and I think the people who need to know are aware that I’m still very much willing and ambitious to represent the national team.”

Throughout his career, Balogun has earned 46 caps for Nigeria and has scored a goal, contributing to the team’s efforts on various international stages. His determination to continue playing for the Super Eagles highlights his passion for the game and his desire to contribute to the national side in future competitions.
