Air Sierra Leone Resumes Lagos-Freetown Flights After 15-Year Hiatus
After more than 15 years of inactivity, Sierra Leone’s national carrier, Air Sierra Leone, has resumed scheduled flight operations between Lagos and Freetown.
The airline’s return was marked by an inaugural flight ceremony at the Lagos airport on Wednesday, signifying a renewed commitment to fostering trade and connectivity between the two nations.
Air Sierra Leone has partnered with Nigerian airline XEJet for its relaunch, with XEJet providing technical support and three operational aircraft to facilitate the airline’s return to Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, Air Sierra Leone’s General Manager, Edgard Lacle, expressed his excitement about the airline’s comeback.
He confirmed that the airline would operate three weekly flights between Lagos and Freetown on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
“We are starting with this schedule and will increase frequency as passenger demand grows,” Lacle said.
The inaugural flight to Lagos brought 36 passengers, showcasing the potential for increased connectivity and collaboration between the two nations.
Lacle highlighted the strong economic and cultural ties between Sierra Leone and Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of the new route for trade and tourism.
“The connection between Sierra Leone and Nigeria is strong, especially in terms of trade. We have a market, and everyone wants to be part of it. Trade is at the top, with tourism playing a significant role. As the market evolves, we will adjust to meet passenger needs,” Lacle explained.
The Chief Executive Officer of XEJet, Iza Emmanuel, described the resumption of flights as the “rebirth” of Air Sierra Leone in Nigeria. He noted that the airline’s return symbolizes hope, progress, and resilience for Sierra Leone.
“After over 15 years, the Sierra Leonean flag again takes to the skies. This milestone is a testament to the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between Sierra Leone and Nigeria,” Emmanuel said.
He further expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to foster growth and connectivity, stating, “This event reflects the shared vision of growth and opportunity for our people. We are truly honored to celebrate this remarkable milestone.”
