How Can He Be The Speaker, He Should Be Suspended – Ex-Lawmaker Queries Obasa
A former Deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olumuyiwa Jimoh, has called for the suspension of the impeached Speaker of the Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, for continuing to claim the speakership despite his removal earlier this month.
Obasa was ousted on January 13, 2025, after over two-thirds of the 40-member House voted him out, citing allegations of misconduct and other offences.
The former Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to lead the Lagos legislative body.
However, Obasa has remained defiant, insisting that his removal was unconstitutional. On January 25, 2025, he addressed his supporters and alleged that the impeachment process was flawed.
Obasa, who has represented Agege Constituency I since 2007 and served as Speaker since 2015, claimed that the impeachment was orchestrated without transparency.
Jimoh while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Monday, said, “He (Obasa) claims that he is still the speaker which I think he knows that the implication is automatic suspension. I feel he should be suspended for that. It is an impersonation.
“How can he be the bona fide speaker of the house? It is going to lead to his suspension. he knows its implication. he has been in the house for almost two decades. If I were to be in the house, I am going to move a motion for his suspension.”
