This Government Will Not Tolerate Exam Malpractice - Alausa

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has warned that President Bola Tinubu’s government would not accept examination malpractice in schools across the country.

Naija News reports that Alausa gave the warning to heads of institutions concerned with conducting national examinations at the secondary school levels.

He stated this on his X handle on Sunday, while emphasizing the inauguration of the Committee on Improvement of Quality Examinations in Nigeria last Friday.

He explained that the Committee would collaborate to standardize examination practices and implement lasting solutions to address systemic leakages, exam impersonation, fraud, and inadequate supervision.

The Minister decried that examination malpractice had been allowed for too long in the country.

We have allowed exam malpractice to persist for far too long, and its reach has extended beyond students to include parents, teachers, invigilators, and even examination bodies themselves. This has gone on without consequence — until now. Today, we say: No more,” he said.

The Education Minister further disclosed that the government would introduce swapping of students during exams.

“As a short-term measure, we will introduce the local swapping of candidates. This means that students will take exams within their local areas and be randomly swapped to prevent any form of malpractice. By 2027, we aim to fully transition to computer-based testing (CBT) for all exams,” he stated.

The committee has members from WAEC, NECO, JAMB, FME Directors, NABTEB, the All Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Chairs of Principals of Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs), the Council of Commissioners of Education, and others.
