7:27 PMThe hashtag “snow in Kenya” is still trending after snow-covered substances appeared in Nyahururu, Nyandarua County last night.
Many Kenyans living in the area took to the streets to feast on the whitish substances, taking photos and posting them on social media.
The rare event has sparked an online debate of sorts, with many referring to climate change and others to the end of the world.
Atypical for Kenyans with events like this, social media has been full of memes and hilarious jokes ever since.
Shortly after news of the incident sent the internet into a frenzy, the Kenya Meteorological Service took to its Twitter account to explain that the whitish substance was not snow but a hailstorm.
The event in Nyahururu is a hailstorm. Such storms occur when abrupt convection occurs and rain clouds form too quickly.
