The actor was born in the South Korean capital of Seoul on July 7, 1989 to his father known simply as Jerry and his South Korean mother Min-ho Bum. His parents also had two other children, a boy and a girl, both younger than Kim. He spent his growing years in South Korea but eventually moved to Australia where he lived with his father for a while.
As a child, Kim Bum was interested in athletics. Out of this interest, he played on his high school football team and eventually became the team captain. However, he had a dream of becoming an actor one day. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Cung-ang University, where he earned a degree in film and theater. During his time at Cung-ang, he was fully involved in the university’s cultural programs to give him much-needed first-hand acting exhibition on stage.
As a student at the university, he also spoke for an appearance in the Survival Star. The audition ended in sixth place out of hundreds of contestants, but he was disqualified from participating in the show because he was under 20 at the time.
