Alexander Zverev was born on April 20, 1997 in Hamburg, Germany. As a youth he grew up playing field hockey, soccer and tennis, but as he got older he focused exclusively on tennis. Zverev, who was coached by his parents, has enjoyed some success on the Junior Tour, winning the 2014 Junior Australian Open. In 2015 he entered the ATP Top 100 with better performances and ended the year as the youngest player in the top 100. Alexander Zverev won his first ATP Tour title in 2016, beating Stan Wawrinka to win the St Petersburg Open.
2017 was a great year for Zverev as he won two ATP Masters 1000 titles in a big way. He defeated then world champion and title favorite Novak Djokovic and won the Italian Open. In doing so, he became the youngest player to win such a tournament since 19-year-old Djokovic did so in 2007. Zverev, popularly known as Sascha, prevailed with another win against another heavyweight. He defeated Roger Federer in the Rodgers Cup final and won other titles in Montpellier, Washington and Munich.
He became the youngest player to win 5+ titles in a season since Djokovic in 2007 and also the youngest player to break into the top 3 list since Djokovic (aged 19) did so in 2007. Alexander Zverev comes from an illustrious tennis family. His father, Alexander Zverev Sr., was a professional tennis player who at one point ranked among the top 200 players in the world. At Wimbledon he made two appearances in the first round. His mother, Irina Zverev, was also a top-notch tennis player in her prime, eventually finishing fourth.
It is worth noting that Zverev’s parents are originally from Russia, but emigrated to Germany in 1991 and naturalized there.
