How did Joey Heatherton start his professional career?
As a young actress, Heatherton began her professional life and career. Her first television appearance was on her father’s show, The Merry Mailman, a much-loved children’s show in New York.
She joined the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music at the age of 15 as an ensemble member and understudy, and the following year, as a semi-regular on The Perry Como Show (later renamed Perry Como’s Kraft Music Hall), where she played an ecstatic teenager in love with Perry Como, she received her first sustained national exposure.
That same year, Heatherton also released her debut song, “That’s How It Goes”/”I’ll See You”, but it did not do well on the charts.
The same was true for her next three singles. She played a spoiled, wealthy teenager in a 1960 episode of Route 66, which was her first dramatic television performance. In the early 1960s, Heatherton was widely used as a troubled teenager because of her “sexy girl looks.”
In the mid-1960s, Heatherton became known for her passionate dancing on television, which some viewers found disgusting and some commentators characterized as “sordid eroticism”.
On The Tonight Show in 1964, she made an appearance and showed Johnny Carson how to dance to “The Frug.” She appeared on several additional episodes of the show and released “Hullabaloo,” a song she had sung on the show, on Coral Records.
From June through September 1968, Heatherton co-hosted Dean Martin Presents the Golddiggers with Frank Sinatra, Jr., a summer replacement musical comedy hour. She also made appearances on several other television variety series in the 1960s, including This Is Tom Jones, The Andy Williams Show, The Hollywood Palace, and The Ed Sullivan Show.
Additionally, Heatherton made appearances in the 1963 films Twilight of Honor, Where Love Has Gone, and My Blood Runs Cold.[12] She played the young wife of a murder suspect (Oscar nominee Nick Adams) in Twilight of Honor.
The only color film was 1964’s Where Love Has Gone, a high-profile melodrama based on Harold Robbins’ novel about the notorious Lana Turner-Cheryl Crane-Johnny Stompanato manslaughter case. Heatherton played Turner’s character’s daughter, Susan Hayward, in the film.
