Aneta Corsaut was one of the most famous TV actresses of her time who seemed to have a role in every show as she appeared in over thirty TV shows in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Kansas native, who in addition to her acting career also published, is best known for her portrayal of Helen Crump in The Andy Griffith Show (1963-1968) and its spinoff Mayberry RFD (1968 -1969).

Corsaut was born Aneta Louise Corsaut to Opal J. (née Swarens) and Jesse Harrison Corsaut on November 3, 1933, in Hutchinson, Kansas, United States. There are no details of his childhood. However, Corsaut is known to have been a classmate of Polish-American actor Lee Strasberg while they were both at Northwestern University, where she was a playwright major.
In her third year of university, Aneta Corsaut chose to drop out of school to pursue a career as an actress. She moved to New York and had roles in the producers Showcase television series and Robert Montgomery presents in 1955. In 1958, the young actress managed to make her film debut in the science fiction horror film, The blob, the same film where Steve McQueen debuted.
In the following years Corsaut appeared in many television shows, such as Unresolved (1960), Dick Powell’s Zane Gray Theater (1960), The Law and Mr. Jones (1960), Harrigan and His Son (1961 ), Mr. G. Goes to College (1961-1962), and Saints and Sinners (1962), among many others. In 1963, his career reached a peak. She was cast as Professor Helen Crump in The Andy Griffith Show (1963-1968). Meanwhile, Corsaut appeared in the films Good Neighbor Sam (1964) and A Rage to Live(1965) as she also decided to return to school by enrolling at the University of California, Los Angeles where she graduated.
In 1968, Aneta Corsaut resumed her character of Helen Crump in the direct and indirect extension of The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry RFD (1968-1969). Throughout the 70s and 80s, she rose to prominence as a television actress by appearing in several television series like Nanny and the Professor (1970), Owen Marshall: Legal Counsel (1973), Adam-12 (1975), Rich Man, Poor Man (1976), The Runaways (1979), House Calls (1980-1981), Days of Our Lives (1984), Back to Mayberry (1986) and Matlock (1987, 1990, 1991-1992).

Aneta Corsaut never married and had no children. A few publications incorrectly reported that the actress was married, citing the above photo of her in a wedding dress with Andy Griffith. This, however, is untrue as the photo above is from a scene from the first episode of Mayberry RFD, where she exchanged vows with the show’s main character, Sheriff Andy Taylor, played by her supposed husband, Griffith.
But despite not being married to each other, it was well documented that the two actors had an affair while on the show. In the book Andy & Don: The Making of a Friendship and a Classic American TV Show, writer Daniel de Vise reported that the two actors’ on-screen chemistry was so electrifying they couldn’t help to get involved with each other, even though Griffith was at the time married to actress Barbara Griffith.
His death
Aneta Corsaut died of cancer on November 16, 1995, just three days after her 62nd birthday, in Studio City, Los Angeles, California. She was later buried at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, Los Angeles.
