Rangappa was born Renuka Asha Rangappa on November 15, 1974. There is not much information available about her personal life prior to graduate school other than the fact that she attended Kecoughtan High School, a public high school in Hampton, Utah. Virginia.

In 1992, she enrolled at Princeton University.Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. She graduated in 1996 with a degree in Latin American Studies. After her time at Princeton, she spent a year in Bogota, Colombia on a Fulbright scholarship. She left Colombia in 1997 after completing her study on constitutional reform.

Asha then went to Yale Law School in the same year to get a juris doctor (JD). During her studies, she was involved in many extracurricular activities, including serving as a Coker Fellow in Constitutional Law and founding the school’s first theatrical ensemble. They were known as the ‘Court Jesters’. She obtained her law degree in 2000.

Asha Rangappa’s first job came as a medical examiner for Hon. Juan R. Torruella in October 2000. She remained in this role until September of the following year. After working at a law firm for about a year, she realized that was not the path she wanted to take to become a federal prosecutor. Because of this discovery, she left the company and applied to join the FBI following the 9/11 attack. The bureau gave her the job in December 2002. Her stint with the FBI saw her serve as a special agent in counterintelligence investigations in the New York area.

She left the FBI in December 2005 and in the same month was appointed assistant dean of admissions at her alma mater, Yale Law School. Two years later, Rangappa was promoted to associate dean and is also director of admissions at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs.

In addition to her responsibilities, she is an academic staff at Wesleyan University, the Henry C. Lee School of Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven, and the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs at Yale University. In these institutions, she teaches national security law among other related courses.

In 2003, Asha was admitted to the State Bar in Connecticut and New York. She has also served as a board member of the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame, the South Asian Bar Association of Connecticut, and the Society of Former FBI Agents of Connecticut.

As a writer, Asha Rangappa has written editorials for readers like The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times among others. She is also a regular guest on networks such as BBC, NPR and more often CNN where she has been a legal and national security analyst since June 2017.

Rangappa was born to immigrant parents from Karnataka, India. Following the passage of the Hart-Celler Act of 1965, Asha’s parents moved to the United States, where her father would have served as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. Through her parents, Vinaya and Jai, Asha also has a brother, an older sister known as Menaca.
