Although so many entertainment-loving individuals have been thrust into the limelight for their activities online, only a handful have made it into the mainstream entertainment industry. Among this handful is Nora Lum, an American rapper and actress better known by her stage name Awkwafina.
She uploaded a rap video to YouTube in 2012 titled My Vag and due to its vulgar lyrics, she was relieved of her job as an advertising assistant at a publishing company. It also strained her relationship with her father, who, the rapper said, thought she was having a crisis in quarter. However, the video went viral, which launched her into a career in rap and comedy, much to the surprise of everyone including Awkwafina. This later paved the way for her to reach the mainstream and appear in various films such as Ocean 8 and Crazy Rich Asians .

The rapper was born on June 2, 1988 in New York City (NYC) but grew up in Flushing, Queens. She is multicultural as her father, Wally, is a Chinese American while her mother, a painter, immigrated to New York from South Korea.
Not too long after Nora Lum was born, it was discovered that her mother suffered from pulmonary hypertension, which led to her death four years later. After the death of her mother, her paternal grandmother quickly filled the void in her life and was instrumental in shaping her into the woman she is today.
While at school with Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Arts and Performing Arts, Awkwafina always took every opportunity to make people laugh and became popular as a comedian as a result. She also played the trumpet and received training in classical and jazz music.
After high school, Nora transferred to the State University of New York in Albany, where she received her major in Journalism and Women’s Studies, graduating in 2011. She then enrolled at the Beijing Language and Culture University in China, where she studied Mandarin from 2006 to 2008.
Before venturing into the entertainment industry, Awkwafina worked at a video store, an air conditioning company, and as an intern at Gotham Gazette and Times Union before later getting a job as an advertising assistant at a publishing company.
Although Nora Lum has been rapping since she was 13, she only rose to prominence as a rapper in 2012 after releasing her first rap. May Vag , on Youtube. The song, which was released on October 11, 2012, has received more than 4 million views as of February 2019.
After the wide reception of her first song, Awkwafina released more songs on YouTube before eventually releasing her solo album entitled Yellow Ranger on February 11, 2014. She also released the song, Green Tea, in collaboration with Margaret Cho, a multi-faceted entertainer, This was followed in 2016 by an extended play titled In Fina We Trust, which was released on June 8, 2018.
