Actor Ben McKenzie has come a long way from now, having had to work part-time wherever he could find it while searching for his breakthrough acting role. The University of Virginia graduate would land a career-defining role on the television series The OC (2003-2007), which earned him multiple Teen Choice Award nominations.

Of late Mckenzie has added writing and directing to his resume. He has performed all three roles in his latest project, Gotham, in which he plays the character of James Gordon.

Biography (Age)

Ben McKenzie was born Benjamin McKenzie Schenkkan, one of three boys born to Frances Victory and Pieter Meade Schenkkan, on September 12, 1978 in Austin, Texas. His mother was a poet while his father was a lawyer. He is of Dutch-Jewish, English and Scottish descent.

McKenzie attended middle school at St. Andrews Episcopal School where he primarily played soccer and was friends with future NFL player and Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees. He later enrolled at Stephen F. Austin High School, where he continued to play football. After graduating in 1997, McKenzie followed in the footsteps of his father and paternal grandfather and attended the University of Virginia, where he majored in foreign science and economics, graduating in 2001.

After completing his education, Ben McKenziezog moved to New York to begin his acting career. He later moved to Los Angeles for the same reason and found happiness there when he got his big break playing the role of Ryan Atwood on The OC (2003-2007). The show was a smash hit and propelled him to great success by being nominated for numerous Teen Choice Awards. While on the show, McKenzie made his feature film debut in Junebug (2005) and then co-starred with Al Pacino in 88 Minutes (2007).

After The OC ended, McKenzie received critical acclaim for his New York performance in Johnny Got His Gun (2008). He then took on the lead role in Southland (2009-2013) before taking on the role of Captain James Gordon in Gotham (2014-present).

Family – wife, daughter

Ben Mckenzie is married to actress Morena Baccarin, who stars alongside him in Gotham and plays the character of Dr. Leslie Thompkins portrayed. It’s not clear if the two began their romance on the set of Gotham, as they had appeared together in 2006’s teen drama series The OC, suggesting they had known each other for at least a while.

Mckenzie and Baccarin’s relationship hasn’t been without controversy, as their romance appears to have started in her first marriage to film producer and director Austin Chick, with whom she exchanged vows in November 2011. They welcomed a son almost a year later in October 2013 and seemed very happy together until July 2015 when they surprised the public with the news that Chick had filed for divorce. A few months later, during the legal declaration, Baccarin announced that she was pregnant with McKenzie’s child and planned to marry him. Divorce proceedings were finalized on March 18, 2016, a few weeks after Baccarin gave birth to her and McKenzie’s child, a daughter named Frances Laiz Setta Schenkkan, on March 2, 2016.

In late 2016, McKenzie and Baccarin announced their engagement and exchanged vows on June 2, 2017 in Brooklyn, New York.
