Bill was born William Maher on January 20, 1956, in New York, William Aloysius Maher Jr., editor/radio presenter and Julie Maher, nurse. He was raised alongside his sister, Kathy Maher.

While her mother was Jewish, her father was Irish-American who raised his children as Roman Catholics. However, due to his differing views from the church on birth control, the elder Maher stopped taking his children to church when Bill was 13.

Raised in New Jersey, Maher attended Pascack, graduating from high school in 1974. From there, he moved to Cornell University where he says he sold marmite so he could continue his education and won the money he needed to get into acting. The comedian majored in English and history and graduated in 1978.

When he started out as a comedian, Bill Maher found it through his tough language and sarcasm. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he combined comedy and theatre. Some of the films he appeared in at the time include DC Cabin (1983), Club Med and The Rat Boy (1986), and House II: The Second Story (1987).

It was until 1993 that he got his real break when he had his own show, Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. Late Night Political Debate began in 1993 through 1997 on Comedy Central, then from 1997 through 2002 on ABC. Although successful and winning numerous awards, including an Emmy Award, it ended in 2002 after ABC refused to resign from its contract.

After his first show ended, Bill then started Realtime with Bill Maher on the HBO cable television network in 2003.

Realtime not only came to enjoy a large following, but it also received various recognitions. From 2005 to 2014, the show was nominated annually for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Series.
