Billy Gibbons Biography, Age
Gibbons was born on December 16, 1949 as William Frederick Gibbons. He was born in Houston, Texas in a neighborhood called Tanglewood. The rock chef draws his musical influences from his father who was also a musician.
Gibbons’ most exciting birthday present was a Fender Champ electric guitar and amplifier. These were given to him on his 13th birthday.
For his education, Gibbons went to Hollywood, California. Here he studied at the art school of Warner Brothers. It was during his time here that he worked with several bands such as The Coachmen and Billy G & the Blueflames. At the age of 18, Gibbons composed his first carefully taught band, which he called The Moving Sidewalks. The concept and purpose of the musical group was inspired by Roky Erikson, his musician friend, and his own rock band, The 13th Floor Elevators. The Moving Sidewalks had three other members, bassist Don Summers, drummer Dan Mitchell, and keyboardist Tom Moore.
His rock band started making music including his highly successful single 99th Floor. He also met famous rock star Jimi Hendrix around this time and the duo quickly became best friends. This friendship rejected some business arrangements. Gibbon’s The Moving Sidewalk memorably opened for The Jimi Hendrix Experience four times in their career. They also released a full Flash album in 1968.
The following year, Gibbons decided it was time to move on from Sidewalks in Motion. He put together the band ZZ Top with Dusty Hill and Frank Beard both of whom he ripped off the American Blues band. The similarity in their musical styles made it easy for the trio to bond personally and musically. In 1971, under the auspices of London Records, the band released their first project, ZZ Top’s First Album.
The band was growing in reputation and fan base. They kept going full throttle, touring towns, and releasing albums non-stop. They finally decided to take a break in 1977. Their leave lasted two and a half years. During this time, they signed a new recording contract which allowed them to leave the London records for Warner Bros. Records.
It turns out that the two-year rest and the new deal with Warner Bros. have borne fruit. They released their immensely successful album Eliminator in 1983. The album had hit songs like ‘Legs’ and ‘Gimmie All your Lovin’. Eliminator remains ZZ Top’s most popular album with over 10 million sold in the United States and certified Diamond by the RIAA.
By 1994 the band had established themselves as an international act to reckon with and that reputation needed a new deal to match. They left Warner Bros. to sign a multi-million dollar contract under the RCA Records label. In the same year, the group was rewarded for their contribution to music over the years by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
