Although he was born Ernest Frederick McIntyre Bickel, he changed his name to Fredric March when he decided to pursue a career in theater. This name change was inspired by his mother, who had grown up near March Field, a U.S. Army air base in California. March was married to Florence Eldridge, also a renowned actress, with whom he had two children, a daughter named Penelope and a son named Anthony.
