Jean-Pierre Bacri was born on May 24, 1951 in Castiglione, Algeria, to parents of Jewish origin. He is the son of Jean Bacri, an engineer, and Gilberte Krasucki, a housewife. The Bacri family emigrated to France in 1962, after Algeria’s independence. Jean-Pierre is the grandson of Samuel Bacri and Rachel Goldman, two Sephardic Jews from Thessaloniki, Greece. Samuel Bacri, his maternal grandfather, was a fabric merchant recognized in his community. Rachel Goldman, her maternal grandmother, was a devoted housewife. On his father’s side, Jean-Pierre Bacri’s origins go back to Poland.
His paternal grandfather, Isaac Bacri, was a successful merchant in Warsaw, and his paternal grandmother, Esther Wolski, was a discreet and hardworking woman, supporting her husband in his business. Jean-Pierre Bacri is the second child of three siblings. He has an older sister, Arlette, and a younger brother, Henri. After arriving in France, the family settled in Paris, where Jean-Pierre grew up and continued his studies.
