BIOGRAPHY
Christopher McQuarrie attends West Windsor-Plainsboro High School in New Jersey. It was on the benches of this high school that he met Bryan Singer , with whom he formed an unwavering friendship. The friends signed their first collaboration for the film Public Enemy in 1993, a thriller written by McQuarrie and directed by Bryan Singer. This first feature film was screened at the Sundance Film Festival and the Deauville Film Festival in 1993 and won the Jury Prize at these two festivals.

Building on this first success, the two men did it again two years later by signing a great classic of the 90s police thriller, Usual Suspects . Made with a modest budget of 6 million dollars, the film was a huge critical and commercial success and dedicated its main actors ( Gabriel Byrne , Kevin Spacey , Benicio Del Toro …). Christopher McQuarrie received the Oscar for best screenplay for this feature film which has become cult. The screenwriter, who worked in a detective agency for 4 years before devoting himself to cinema with Bryan Singer, draws on this experience to write “Usual Suspects”.

In 2000, the author moved on to directing by signing The Way of the Gun , a brilliant thriller bringing together Ryan Phillippe , Benicio Del Toro and James Caan . McQuarrie returned to the 7th art in 2008, after 8 years of absence. He collaborated again with Bryan Singer by writing the screenplay for Walkyrie . This time, the author tackles the political thriller with the writing of this story based on an event that occurred during the Second World War, the failed attack against Hitler in July 1944. The film is notably performed by Tom Cruise and Kenneth Branagh .

Back in the spotlight, the screenwriter created the TV series Persons Unknown in 2010 and wrote the screenplay for The Tourist by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck , a remake of the French film Anthony Zimmer . Although bringing together a prestigious cast ( Johnny Depp , Angelina Jolie ) and benefiting from a huge budget (100 million dollars), the film was a critical and commercial failure. This did not prevent McQuarrie from returning to directing once again in 2012 with the adaptation of Lee Child ‘s bestselling novel , Jack Reacher . This film allows him to work again with Tom Cruise, who plays the solitary and taciturn vigilante Jack Reacher.

Christopher McQuarrie remains very prominent in 2013; the author signs the scenarios ofThe Wolverine by James Mangold and Jack the Giant Slayer by Bryan Singer, marking his fourth collaboration with his childhood friend. He then devoted himself mainly to writing and directing the new episodes of Mission Impossible: Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018), Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning (2023) and Mission Impossible 8 ( 2024). At the same time, he participated in the writing of other blockbusters with Tom Cruise: Edge of Tomorrow , The Mummy and Top Gun Maverick , which generated nearly $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office.
